The tri-colored flag was first introduced by Thomas Francis Meagher as a symbol of the Young Iirsh movement in 1848. The green represents the Gaelic and Anglo-Norman element of the Irish population and the orange represents the Protestant planter stock in the north of Ireland, supporters of William of Orange. The meaning of the white was expressed by Meagher when he introduced the flag. He said, "The white in the center signifies a lasting truce between the 'Orange' and the 'Green' and I trust that beneath its folds the hands of the Irish Protestant and the Irish Catholic may be clasped in heroic brotherhood."
It was not until the 1916 Irish Easter Rebellion, when the tricolor was raised above the General Post Office in Dublin, that this flag came to be regarded as a national symbol. It rapidly gained acceptance, and its use as the national flag is now enshrined in the Constitution of Ireland.
